7 Days Basic Peru

Day 1 – Arrive in Lima
Upon arrival you will be greeted and transferred to your accommodation. Overnight at selected hotel (B)

Lima is situated in the central western region of Peru between the sea and the western cordillera of the Andes. It is home to more than 6 million inhabitants and has been the nation’s capital since the Spanish Conquest, having been founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro. From that period in history still survive old mansions, churches and convents as well as the bullring Plaza de Acho, the third most ancient in the world; likewise the original building of the University of San Marcos, the oldest in America. Lima has grown and modernised; it has many excellent hotels and restaurants where one can savour both local and international dishes. It is important to note that Peruvian cooking is offering an abundance of varied and exquisite dishes. As regards to museums, the most outstanding are the Anthropological and Archaeological, the Larco Herrera, the Amano, and the Gold Collection. Neighbouring Lima, the port of Callao has been prepared for reception of tourists on cruises.

Day 2 – Lima – Half Day City Tour
Today enjoy a tour visiting both the colonial and modern sections of this “City of Kings.” Colonial sites include the lovely Plaza de Armas with its cathedral and palace, and the exquisite Torre Tagle Palace modern day seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In modern Lima, drive along the exclusive residential areas of Miraflores and San Isidro. Afterwards finish with a visit to the famous Larco Herrera Museum. The museum showcases one of the world’s largest collections of pre-Columbian art including Moche, Nazca, Chimú, and Inca pieces. Additionally, the Larco Museum is well known for its gallery of pre-Columbian erotic pottery. Return to hotel.

Day 3 – Lima/Cuzco
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Cuzco. Upon arrival you will be greeted and transferred to your accommodation. Overnight at selected hotel (B)

Welcome to Cuzco, stately and historic, with stone streets and building foundations laid by the Incas more than 5 centuries ago, the town is much more than a mere history lesson. Cuzco is a fascinating blend of pre-Columbian and colonial history and contemporary mestizo culture. The Incas made Q’osqo (meaning “navel of the world” in Quechua) the political, military, and cultural centre of their empire, which stretched up and down the Andes, from Ecuador through Bolivia and all the way to Chile. Cusco was the empire’s holy city, and it was also the epicentre of the legendary Inca network of roads connecting all points in the empire.

Afternoon city tour & visit to nearby ruins
Morning at leisure. This afternoon depart your hotel on your city tour, visiting the principal monuments and points of interest in Cuzco, considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Western Hemisphere, including the nearby important Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman, Kenko and Tambo Machay. Overnight at selected hotel (B)

Day 4 – Full day tour to Pisac & Ollantaytambo including lunch
After breakfast, drive through the fertile countryside to the colonial village of Pisac. During your visit to the bustling marketplace you will have the opportunity to bargain with the locals for many different types of Peruvian handicrafts and jewellery (This is the place to buy beautiful hand-woven ponchos and other handicrafts). After lunch the tour continues to the village of Ollantaytambo for a visit to its impressive Inca fortress. Overnight in the Sacred Valley at selected hotel (B, L)

Day 5 – Cuzco/Aguas Calientes
Full day Vistadome train excursion to Machu Picchu including lunch

On arrival, shuttle buses take you up a 600 metre serpentine road to the entrance of Machu Picchu, the fabled Lost City of the Incas, never found by the Spanish Conquistadores and only rediscovered in 1911 by American archaeologist Hiram Bingham. Enjoy a guided tour of the ruins followed by lunch. Overnight in Aguas Calientes at selected hotel (B, L)
